It was a Saturday, and my oldest daughter, Morgan, had just graduated high school. It was a bittersweet time for us both. Morgan attended one school from preschool all the way through graduation. To say her teachers, Night Owl friends, and coaches were a second family is an understatement. On that day, Morgan brought me a box she had found in her closet. In it was all of her school T-shirts from every event she ever attended, every team she played on, and every event she participated in (and Morgan was one busy girl! ). Making that quilt filled me with so much pride. I doted upon each square, and each one helped me remember my daughter at different ages as i watched her participate and play with friends. Archeologists explore ancient sites covered in hieroglyphs and petroglyphs, but the meaning of these earliest tales spun by our ancestors are left open to interpretation. We do our best to guess the significance of each symbol, but without a precise language, we’re left with theories instead of details about our ancestors’ lives. When you spin your own story, with the help of our quilt artists, you create an important artifact from your life. While your shirts represent a moment in time to you; your children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who will use this quilt to recall your experience may not know the significance behind each square.
